On Passover, we may not OWN any leavened products, in addition to the prohibition of eating such.
To this end, one simply needs authorize the rabbi to sell your chometz to a non-Jew and to buy it back on your behalf after the Holiday. This way, the chometz physically remains in your home, however it does not belong to you for the duration of Passover.
